By the year 2050, Kuwait intends to become carbon-neutral in oil and gas production
On the sidelines of the COP27 climate conference held in Egypt at the end of January, Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Salem al-Sabah, told state news agency KUNA that Kuwait wants to achieve carbon neutrality in the oil and gas sector by 2050, and the whole country a decade after that.
In an interview with Al-Sabah, he stated that Kuwait’s plan to become carbon-neutral by 2025 is “a solid and serious pledge that we will make.” Kuwait is a major oil exporter and a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
A number of Kuwait’s senior officials attended the Middle East Green Initiative summit which took place on the sidelines of COP27 under the leadership of Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad Al-Jaber al-Sabah, the crown prince of Kuwait. He reiterated Kuwait’s commitment to regional and international environmental resolutions and initiatives, as well as citing the expansion of green areas.
The Middle East Green Initiative was launched by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last year as part of efforts to reduce regional carbon emissions.
