Artificial Intelligence is transforming the world, from healthcare to finance to climate modeling itself. But behind this rapid innovation lies a lesser-discussed reality: AI and computing come with a growing environmental cost.

As we build smarter systems, the question we must ask is, at what ecological price?

The Environmental Cost of AI: Why Green Computing Matters in 2026

The Energy Behind Intelligence

Modern AI systems rely on vast computational power. Training large-scale models can consume thousands of megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, often equivalent to the annual energy use of hundreds of households.

Data centers, the backbone of AI, already account for around 1–1.5% of global electricity consumption, and this number is rising as AI adoption accelerates.

Every search, every model run, every automated process draws energy, making digital activity far from “invisible” in environmental terms.

Carbon Footprint of AI Models

Training a single advanced AI model can generate significant carbon emissions, especially when powered by fossil-fuel-based grids.

Key contributors include:

High-performance GPUs and servers

Continuous model training and retraining

Large-scale data storage

As AI becomes more embedded in daily life, its cumulative carbon footprint is growing, quietly but rapidly.

The Data Center Dilemma

Data centers are expanding globally to meet AI demand. While they enable innovation, they also:

Consume massive amounts of electricity

Require extensive cooling systems

Put pressure on local water resources

Cooling alone can use millions of liters of water annually, raising concerns in water-stressed regions.

This creates a paradox: The digital world feels weightless—but its infrastructure is resource-intensive.

E-Waste: The Overlooked Impact

Beyond energy, hardware turnover adds another layer of environmental cost.

Frequent upgrades in:

Servers

GPUs

Storage systems

lead to increasing electronic waste (e-waste), one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally.

Much of this waste is difficult to recycle and often ends up in landfills, releasing toxic materials into the environment.

The Rise of Green Computing

The good news? The industry is beginning to respond.

Green computing focuses on:

Energy-efficient algorithms

Renewable-powered data centers

Optimized model training (doing more with less compute)

Major tech players are investing in carbon-neutral or carbon-negative goals, while startups are building solutions that reduce AI’s environmental footprint.

Smarter AI, Lower Impact

A key shift in 2026 is moving from “bigger models” to “better models.”

This includes:

Model compression and efficiency techniques

Edge computing to reduce data transfer

Selective training instead of continuous retraining

The goal is clear: maximize intelligence while minimizing resource use.

Why This Conversation Matters

AI has the potential to solve climate challenges—but if left unchecked, it can also contribute to them.

Balancing innovation with sustainability requires:

Transparent reporting of AI energy use

Responsible infrastructure planning

Conscious consumption of digital services

Because sustainability isn’t just about physical industries anymore, it’s deeply tied to our digital future.

Conclusion

Green computing is no longer optional, it’s essential.

As AI continues to shape the world, we must ensure that progress does not come at the cost of the planet.

The future of innovation must be both intelligent and sustainable.

Because true advancement isn’t just about what we build, It’s about how to responsibly build it.

Sustainability is no longer a niche business strategy — it has become a competitive necessity.

Consumers increasingly prefer environmentally responsible brands, investors are prioritizing ESG performance, and governments are tightening climate disclosure regulations. As a result, sustainability messaging has become a powerful marketing tool.

However, when environmental claims exceed actual environmental impact, companies risk falling into a growing credibility trap known as greenwashing.

Understanding greenwashing — and how to avoid it — is now essential for modern marketers.

What Is Greenwashing?

Greenwashing refers to the practice of misleading consumers about a company’s environmental practices or the sustainability of its products.

Instead of making meaningful environmental improvements, organizations exaggerate sustainability initiatives to appear environmentally responsible.

The term was first popularized by environmentalist Jay Westerveld in 1986, when he criticized hotels encouraging towel reuse under the guise of environmental protection while primarily aiming to reduce operational costs.

Today, greenwashing appears across industries—from fashion and food to finance and energy—as companies attempt to capture the growing market of eco-conscious consumers.

Why Greenwashing Happens

The rise of sustainability-focused consumers has created strong incentives for brands to promote environmental credentials.

Companies may engage in greenwashing to:

attract eco-conscious consumers

appeal to ESG investors

improve brand reputation

comply with sustainability trends without operational change

In many cases, organizations spend more resources promoting sustainability than implementing it, creating a gap between marketing narratives and actual impact.

Common Types of Greenwashing

Greenwashing rarely appears as blatant false advertising. Instead, it usually takes subtle forms.

1. Vague Environmental Claims

Terms like:

eco-friendly

natural

sustainable

green

are frequently used without measurable definitions or proof.

These buzzwords sound positive but often lack meaningful standards.

2. Hidden Trade-Offs

A company highlights one environmentally friendly feature while ignoring larger environmental impacts.

Example:
Promoting recyclable packaging while the product manufacturing process produces high emissions.

3. Lack of Evidence

Environmental claims are made without supporting data, certifications, or lifecycle analysis.

For example:

“Made with sustainable materials” without specifying percentages or sourcing.

4. Misleading Imagery

Nature imagery — forests, leaves, animals — can create an environmental association even when the product has little sustainability benefit.

This visual tactic can strongly influence purchasing decisions.

5. False Certifications

Some companies create unofficial eco labels that resemble legitimate certifications but lack third-party verification.

Real-World Examples of Greenwashing

Greenwashing has appeared in multiple industries:

Fashion

Fast fashion brands promoting “sustainable collections” that represent a small fraction of total production.

Fossil Fuel Industry

Energy companies highlighting renewable investments while continuing large-scale fossil fuel expansion.

Consumer Goods

Products labeled “natural” even when most ingredients are synthetic.

Why Greenwashing Is Increasingly Risky

Greenwashing is no longer just a reputation risk — it is becoming a regulatory issue.

Regulators worldwide are tightening environmental marketing rules.

For example:

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) developed the Green Guides to help companies avoid misleading environmental claims in advertising.

Governments are introducing stricter sustainability disclosure requirements for corporate reporting.

Meanwhile, digital transparency means inconsistencies are quickly exposed by journalists, watchdog organizations, and consumers.

The Cost of Losing Consumer Trust

Brand trust is fragile.

Once consumers perceive deception, rebuilding credibility can take years.

Greenwashing damages:

brand reputation

investor confidence

consumer loyalty

sustainability credibility across industries

It also undermines legitimate environmental initiatives by increasing skepticism toward genuine sustainability efforts.

How to Avoid Greenwashing in Your Marketing

Companies can communicate sustainability effectively while maintaining credibility by following several key principles.

1. Substantiate Every Environmental Claim

All sustainability claims should be supported by measurable data such as:

carbon emissions reduction

energy consumption improvements

recycled material percentages

lifecycle assessment results

Evidence-based marketing builds credibility.

2. Use Recognized Certifications

Third-party certifications increase trust because they provide independent verification.

Examples include:

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

Fair Trade

Energy Star

Cradle to Cradle

Independent validation reduces skepticism.

3. Be Specific Instead of Vague

Avoid broad claims like:

❌ “eco-friendly packaging”

Instead say:

✅ “packaging made from 80% recycled cardboard and fully recyclable”

Precision improves transparency.

4. Communicate Trade-Offs Honestly

No product is completely sustainable.

Honest communication about limitations increases credibility and reduces accusations of greenwashing.

Example:

“While we reduced packaging waste by 40%, our logistics emissions remain a challenge.”

5. Align Marketing With Operational Reality

Sustainability messaging must reflect real company practices.

If marketing highlights sustainability while operations remain carbon-intensive, credibility gaps appear quickly.

6. Integrate Sustainability Into Business Strategy

Sustainability should extend beyond marketing campaigns and influence:

supply chains

product design

procurement

governance policies

When sustainability becomes embedded in operations, marketing naturally becomes authentic.

Greenwashing vs Genuine Sustainable Marketing

Greenwashing

Genuine Sustainability Marketing

Vague claims

Measurable metrics

No proof

Verified data

Marketing-driven

Operations-driven

Self-created labels

Third-party certifications

PR campaigns

Long-term sustainability strategy

The Future of Sustainability Communication

The sustainability landscape is shifting from storytelling to accountability.

Companies increasingly rely on:

ESG reporting

carbon accounting

lifecycle assessments

sustainability disclosures

Environmental claims must withstand scrutiny from regulators, investors, and consumers alike.

Conclusion

Greenwashing may generate short-term attention, but it erodes long-term trust.

Authentic sustainability communication requires transparency, measurable impact, and alignment between marketing narratives and operational practices.

In a marketplace defined by environmental urgency, credibility is the most valuable sustainability asset a brand can build.

Green finance and ESG investing are no longer niche ideas. They have become a major part of how money is used to help the planet and its people. And we will continue to see this shift, to a greater extent, in 2026.

Today, investors are looking beyond profits and paying close attention to where capital flows and the impact it creates. From funding clean energy projects to adopting ethical practices, we are witnessing a welcome and long-overdue shift.

Whether it is understanding climate risks or undertaking a strong sense of responsibility, they have now become just as important as returns.

Ahead, we will walk you through the main green finance and ESG investing trends to watch in 2026.

Let’s dive in.

Green Finance & ESG Investing Trends for 2026

Trend 1 – Climate Risk Reporting Goes Mainstream

Climate risks reporting is now a must in 2026. As a company, you are required to disclose how climate change can affect your business.

Governments need companies to share information about pollution, climate risks, and their plans. Whereas, investors want this information because climate problems can affect profits, loans, and company value.

If a company hides these risks, investors may not trust it. Simply put, companies now must show how prepared they are for climate change, just like they show their finances.

Trend 2 – More Money Flowing into Sustainable Assets

Sustainable investments continue to attract capital as investors look for long-term value in clean energy, climate solutions, and ESG-aligned assets. Basically, investors are not shying away from putting their money into things that are good for the planet. This includes renewable energy like solar and wind, clean technology, and green bonds.

Infact, global sustainable funds grew to record levels, with assets under management hitting around $3.56 trillion by the end of 2024. This shows a continued interest in ESG strategies. The good news is that money is moving toward cleaner and greener choices.

Trend 3 – AI & Data Power ESG Decisions

Today, AI analyzes huge amounts of data to make wiser choices about ESG. Around 63% of companies are already using or planning to use AI for ESG data collection, analysis, and reporting. For instance, AI can help you understand how much pollution a company creates or how they treat their employees, and give it a score. This helps people know which companies are doing well.

Some tools even use satellites and real-time sensors to watch things like pollution and emissions. So, companies can’t easily hide damaging behavior.

With AI, investors can spot risks and good opportunities faster than before.

Trend 4 – Greenwashing Watchdogs Get Sharper

Greenwashing is when companies describe themselves as eco-conscious when it’s just the opposite. Previously, a lot of companies would simply put the label of being eco-friendly without having to prove it. That won’t be the case anymore.

Governments and investors are acting like strict teachers and asking companies to show real proof.

In 2026, companies will have to provide numbers, reports, and checks from experts to confirm what they claim. If a brand says it is “eco-friendly,” it must show data to support it.

What Does This Mean for Sustainable Investments?

This means investing is changing. Nearly 90% of global individual investors say they are interested in sustainable investments. Also, 84% of institutional investors expect the share of sustainable assets in their portfolios to rise over the next two years.

So, people are not just looking at profits anymore. They also care about helping the planet and people. Companies that are transparent, use clean energy, and provide clear information are more likely to attract investment. On the other hand, companies that claim to be “green” without proof risk losing trust and funding.

For investors, the transparency that we are about to see will make investing safer and more strategic.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates; 11 December 2025: Veolia, the global leader of ecological transformation, has launched a new digital education initiative called ‘Junior Resourcers’ across the Near and Middle East. The bilingual program, initially offered in English and Arabic, is designed to engage students aged 7–10 and raise awareness about environmental issues while inspiring them to take action toward a sustainable future.

The programme is structured to help students understand the factors that impact the environment while having fun and using their creativity and experiences to engage with the topic. It will be available in Jordan, the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain. The objective is to reach 1,000 children by the end of 2026, with the aim of extending the programme to other countries and schools in the Middle East.

It aligns with Veolia’s GreenUp 2027 strategic programme, which aims to accelerate the deployment of concrete solutions to depollute, decarbonize and regenerate resources. It also supports ongoing local efforts within the Near and Middle East to enhance environmental awareness through targeted educational initiatives in schools.

The programme is named after Veolia’s motto of “Resourcing the World,” and spreads across five topics: Circular Economy and Waste Management, Water, Energy, Food Waste, and Climate Change. Each module is 40 minutes and is led by a cohort of experienced teachers, equipped with digital toolkits. The modules also include quizzes, videos, in-class and at-home activities, interactive workshops, and games to ensure enhanced participation and engagement from students.

Students will also have the opportunity to visit Veolia’s plants and sites involved in wastewater treatment and waste management, gaining firsthand experience in ecological transformation from the global leader in the field.

Education is a cornerstone of Veolia’s local engagement and a key part of its strategic plan. Through programmes like Junior Resourcers, Veolia is taking action to help future generations understand environmental issues and develop the skills needed to design, implement, and sustain solutions for a more sustainable future.

The initial deployment will take place at
SWA’s state-of-the-art research and development facility in Jubail at The Water Technologies
Innovation Institute and Research Advancements (WTIIRA), one of the world’s foremost centers
for next-generation desalination technology.
With Saudi Arabia accounting for 22% of global desalination capacity, this milestone project will
establish the foundation for scaling across SWA’s national desalination network, directly
advancing Vision 2030’s goals of environmental sustainability, economic diversification, and
technological innovation.
Ebb enters this partnership with extensive validation from multiple U.S. pilots, including multi-
year demonstrations with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory (PNNL) and Project Macoma in Washington state.
Desalination is essential to the Kingdom’s water security and economic development and
continues to expand rapidly to meet rising demand—with capacity projected to increase 10%
from 16 million to 17.8 million cubic meters per day by 2030. Historically, the brine produced by
desalination has had no value—treated simply as a waste byproduct of freshwater production.
Now, through its partnership with Ebb, the Saudi Water Authority is transforming this brine into a
valuable resource, using innovative electrochemical technology that integrates seamlessly with
existing desalination systems.
Ebb’s electrochemical system converts desalination brine into three valuable products: caustic
soda, hydrochloric acid, and a low-salinity brine that can be recycled back into the desalination
process to extract additional freshwater. Both the caustic soda and acid can be reused within
desalination plants or supplied to nearby industries—including aluminum refining, energy
operations, and other industrial processes critical to the Kingdom’s economy. The caustic soda
can also be used to enhance seawater alkalinity, kickstarting a natural process that permanently
removes CO₂ from the atmosphere. This innovation supports the Kingdom’s broader goal of

SWA’s desalination plants have the
potential to remove 85 megatons of CO₂ each year, directly contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision
2030 Net Zero objectives, while increasing plant efficiency. Beyond carbon removal, the process
also helps restore ocean chemistry by lowering acidity levels caused by excess atmospheric
carbon—benefiting marine ecosystems in the Arabian Gulf. These outcomes build on scientific
studies conducted in the United States, which demonstrated measurable improvements in
ocean chemistry when Ebb’s process is deployed.
“This partnership represents a transformative moment for both desalination and carbon removal.
By integrating Ebb’s technology with SWA’s desalination infrastructure, we’re proving that
addressing water scarcity and climate change aren’t competing priorities—they’re
complementary solutions. SWA’s forward-thinking approach demonstrates how the desalination
industry can unlock immense value and be a critical part of addressing some of the world’s most
complex challenges profitably.” Ben Tarbell, Ebb’s CEO and Co-founder.
“This groundbreaking partnership demonstrates how Saudi Arabia is leveraging its position as
the world’s largest desalinated water producer to create entirely new industries. The technology
can be manufactured locally, creating jobs and reducing our reliance on imported chemicals,
while our deployment establishes a model for the broader GCC region and water-scarce nations
worldwide. We are not simply adopting technology – we are building a domestic carbon removal
industry that supports government priorities’ economic diversification and positions the Kingdom
as an exporter of climate solutions.” Tariq Alghaffari, SWA Vice President for Research &
Promising Technologies.

Dubai, GITEX GLOBAL returns to Dubai 13–17 October 2025, bringing the tech industry’s brightest minds and fastest-moving companies together for five days of keynotes, product reveals, policy debate and deal-making across AI, cloud, data centres, healthtech, mobility and a rapidly growing sustainability agenda. This year’s edition, which expands across the Dubai World Trade Centre and Dubai Harbour, will be the biggest yet and places climate tech and green innovation center-stage alongside AI and enterprise technology. (GITEX Global)

GITEX’s 2025 program packs ministerial participation and heavyweight industry voices. Confirmed speakers so far include senior UAE government leaders, H.E. Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri (Minister of Economy) and H.E. Omar Sultan Al Olama (Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy & Remote Work), alongside an international line-up of policy-makers, investors and technologists. These sessions will focus on enabling frameworks for AI, digital economy growth, and how technology can be marshalled to meet ime

inational and corporate climate targets. (GITEX Global)

Scale and scope: what to expect
Organisers and industry trackers expect thousands of exhibitors and a six-figure audience across the week, with a mix of national pavilions, global cloud players, telecoms, enterprise vendors and early-stage climate tech startups. GITEX’s exhibitor directories and trade listings show participation running into the multiple thousands of companies and an audience in the tens or hundreds of thousands, underscoring GITEX’s function as a business connector for the MENA and APAC markets. (VisitorsList)

Sustainability is no longer a side event — it’s a program pillar

For 2025, GITEX has formalised its sustainability programming with dedicated streams and satellite events: GITEX Green Impact, a platform for climate tech pioneers and policy-makers, and GITEX Impact, a climate-tech hub that runs in the days leading into the main summit (notably Oct 12–15 for Impact activity). These tracks bring climate-tech startups, financiers, municipal planners and corporates together to accelerate commercial deployments of low-carbon solutions. Expect live demonstrations, procurement roundtables and investor matchmaking for energy-efficient data centres, clean mobility, waste-to-value, circular materials and carbon management tools. (GITEX Global)

Beyond the conference stage, GITEX is also showcasing built examples and policy playbooks: Dubai’s sustainable-city initiatives, typified by developments like The Sustainable City, demonstrate how solar, energy-efficient design and local microgrids can be integrated at scale. These case studies will be used to ground technical discussions in deployable urban models for the Gulf and beyond. (GITEX Global)

What the sustainability agenda must tackle at GITEX 2025

While technology is a powerful enabler, panellists and delegates at GITEX will need to address a set of hard, systemic questions if climate tech is to move from pilots to mass adoption:

• Financing and market signals. Climate-tech VC flows remain volatile in 2025: investors are selective, and while pockets of capital (especially for removal and infrastructure) remain sizable, total H1 2025 funding data shows a cooling compared with previous years. GITEX needs to be a forum where risk-reduction instruments, public-private finance and blended capital are discussed and matched to projects. (CTVC by Sightline Climate)

• AI applied responsibly for decarbonization. AI is accelerating optimization in energy, grids, logistics and materials, but ethical use, transparency and standards are prerequisites. Industry leaders must agree on responsible AI guardrails that also enable decarbonization use cases at industrial scale. (S&P Global)

• Standards and procurement. Public sector procurement and multinational corporate buying can scale clean technologies rapidly if harmonized standards, measurement and procurement pathways are available. GITEX is an opportunity to align technical standards with procurement roadmaps for cities and utilities. (See GITEX panels on Smart Cities & Green Impact). (GITEX Global)

• Talent and reskilling. Deploying climate and digital solutions requires a workforce that understands both domains. Sessions should explore how to retrain technicians, data scientists and operators for new green jobs. (JPMorgan)

• From pilots to industrial scale. Many promising climate innovations stall at demonstration scale. The conference needs to connect industrial adopters, regulators and financiers to shorten the path to large-scale deployment. (S&P Global)

Trends to watch at GITEX 2025 – short list

AI for energy systems and industrial efficiency (AI models controlling grids, buildings, process plants). (McKinsey & Company)

Carbon removal and high-integrity offsets (investor interest in removal projects is rising as some major corporations seek durable, verifiable credits). (The Wall Street Journal)

Circular materials and electrification (battery, storage & grid innovation that supports electrification of transport and industry). (S&P Global)

Climate-smart data centres (industry efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of compute and AI workloads). (Dark Reading)

Who’s coming and why it matters

Expect a mix of government delegations, system integrators, green-tech startups, major cloud and telecom platforms (including returning global names such as Huawei), and international investors. These attendees combine policy authority, capital and procurement power, a vital mix if clean tech pilots are to be converted into real city and industry projects. (GITEX Global)

About Sustainable Brands Journal media partner

SBJ is proud to participate as an official media partner for GITEX GLOBAL 2025. Our editorial and events team will be on the ground, documenting panels, producing interviews with climate-tech leaders and curating sustainability-focused coverage for Sustainable Brands Journal. As media partners, we will spotlight practical stories of deployment, reportable procurement wins, and the policy steps that materially accelerate decarbonization outcomes.

Ms. Ray in her address, stated that to achieve low carbon and climate resilient growth, India requires concerted efforts, a cohesive approach, and the collective efforts of all actors, policymakers, regulators, and the financial system. She also mentioned that there should be a concerted approach around taxonomy, green guidelines, and financial products, as well as defining the roles of the private and public sector and bankers and asset managers. She also pointed out that the Budget presented for the year 2024-25 called for developing India’s own climate finance taxonomy to enhance the availability of capital for climate adaptation and mitigation. This will help India achieve its climate commitments and green transition. A climate finance taxonomy is a system that classifies which parts of the economy may be marketed as sustainable investments. It helps guide investors and banks in directing trillions toward impactful investments to tackle climate change, she said. Ms Ray added that the challenging task and a clear opportunity for the Indian taxonomy would be to classify and identify adaptation and resilience measures, which may serve as a blueprint of action for other countries in the region and beyond aiming at unlocking both public and private sources of finance.

Ms Ray also focused on Green Bank- a financial institution public or quasi-public that utilises innovative financing techniques and market development tools in partnership with the private sector to accelerate deployment of clean energy technologies. In this context she spoke of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) which promotes clean energy investments.

Dr Pant stated that in today’s era, tackling climate change is not just an environmental agenda but it is also a development imperative for which additional financial resources are needed. He said, the focus must be on scaling investments in ecosystem-based approaches, promoting climate-resilient agriculture, and enhancing infrastructure resilience. He further highlighted the importance of community engagement in climate change efforts and the need to collaborate and create decentralized, context-specific funding models.

The workshop is part of an ongoing effort to understand India’s climate financing needs and create awareness across stakeholders on the scale of mobilisation needed to accelerate investment in climate resilient development in India. The workshop also focused on the imminent need to increase investment in climate adaptation.

Saudi Aramco has come up with it’s initiative known as Mobile Carbon Capture (MCC) to address the global issues of carbon emissions. It is engineered in such a way so as to directly capture carbon dioxide emissions from the internal combustion engines of the vehicles.

Pioneering Role in Carbon Capture Technology – A Roadmap for Sustainable Transport

Can we capture and store carbon dioxide for various industrial applications?

Yes, Aramco has been at the forefront of developing carbon capture technologies since 2010, striving to enhance vehicular performance and reducing emissions.

Internal combustion engines have been powering vehicles for decades, however, their environmental impact has become a growing concern. Engines typically convert only 25-40% of fuel energy into propulsion, with the remainder lost as heat. Aramco’s interesting breakthrough energy recovery system captures this waste heat to fuel its CO2 capture, effectively tackling one of the key challenges of emissions reduction. The captured CO2 is then compressed, safely stored, and transported via truck or pipeline. Depending on local regulations and geological conditions, the CO2 can be sequestered underground or repurposed for various industrial applications. Additionally, Aramco is exploring technologies to convert CO2 back into fuels using renewable energy sources.

In 2011, post extensive research and development, Aramco successfully integrated its carbon capture system into a Ford F-250 pickup truck, achieving a CO2 capture rate of 10%. By 2013, Aramco transitioned to a potassium carbonate liquid solvent, which reduced the system’s size to one-eighth of its original configuration allowing most components to be installed beneath a Toyota Camry’s chassis, tripling the system’s efficiency and capturing 30% of the car’s CO2 emissions while in motion. Aramco focused on integrating this system into heavy-duty trucks. In 2019, they adapted their technology for a class 8 Volvo heavy-duty truck, utilizing the same principles as their passenger car prototype but accommodating a larger system situated between the cab and trailer. This new facilitated to recover energy from the engine, achieving a remarkable 40% CO2 capture rate.
