Sustainability, CSR, and ESG represent different stages of responsible business. Sustainability is the long-term vision, CSR focuses on voluntary social initiatives, and ESG provides a measurable, data-driven framework used by investors to evaluate environmental, social, and governance performance. Together, they show the shift from intent to measurable impact.

Sustainability vs CSR vs ESG: Understanding the Shift from Intent to Impact

In today’s climate-conscious world, terms like sustainability, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) are often used interchangeably.

But they are not the same.

👉 They represent different stages in how businesses approach responsibility, risk, and long-term value creation. Understanding this evolution is critical for:

Businesses building sustainable strategies

Investors evaluating risk and performance

Consumers choosing responsible brands

Key Takeaways

Sustainability is the long-term vision for responsible business

CSR focuses on voluntary social and ethical initiatives

ESG is a measurable framework used by investors

Businesses are shifting from intent → strategy → accountability

ESG is now critical for transparency, compliance, and growth

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the foundation of responsible business.

It refers to meeting present needs without compromising future generations.

In Business, It Means Balancing:

Environmental protection

Social well-being

Economic growth

👉 Sustainability is:

Long-term

Strategic

Holistic

It defines how a business operates within planetary limits.

What is CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)?

CSR is how companies traditionally acted on sustainability.

✔ Common CSR Activities:

Philanthropy and donations

Community programs

Employee welfare initiatives

👉 CSR is typically:

Voluntary

Reputation-driven

Separate from core operations

💡 Core Question CSR Answers:

👉 “How can we give back?”

What is ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance)?

ESG is the modern, data-driven evolution of sustainability.

ESG Pillars:

Environmental: Emissions, energy use, waste

Social: Labor practices, diversity, community impact

Governance: Ethics, leadership, transparency

👉 Unlike CSR, ESG is:

Measurable

Integrated into business strategy

Used by investors for decision-making

For a deeper understanding of frameworks and compliance, explore this👉 ultimate guide to ESG reporting standards and frameworks (CSRD, SASB, GRI, TCFD)

Core Question ESG Answers:

👉 “How sustainable and responsible is this business at its core?”

Sustainability vs CSR vs ESG: Key Differences

Aspect

Sustainability

CSR

ESG

Scope

Broad, long-term vision

Specific initiatives

Measurable framework

Focus

Planet + people + profit

Social responsibility

Risk, performance, accountability

Approach

Strategic

Voluntary

Data-driven

Purpose

Long-term impact

Giving back

Measuring and improving impact

The Evolution: From Intent to Measurable Impact

The relationship between these concepts is not separate—it’s progressive.

Business Evolution:

CSR → Intent (doing good)

Sustainability → Strategy (long-term thinking)

ESG → Measurement (data & accountability)

👉 This shift ensures sustainability is not just messaging—but actionable and measurable.

Why ESG is Driving Business Decisions in 2026

Today, ESG is influencing:

Investment decisions

Regulatory compliance

Brand reputation

👉 The rise of green finance and ESG investing trends shows how capital is increasingly flowing toward responsible businesses.

📊 Why Investors Prefer ESG:

Because in 2026: 👉 Success is no longer defined by profit alone—but by how responsibly that profit is created 🌱

Final Insight

The future belongs to brands that:

Act responsibly

The terms net zero energy and net zero carbon are often used interchangeably — but they are not the same. In fact, confusing these two concepts is one of the biggest reasons sustainability claims fall apart under scrutiny.

For brands, buildings, and even governments, understanding the difference between net zero energy vs net zero carbon is critical. One focuses on energy balance, while the other focuses on climate impact. And only one directly addresses global emissions.

What Is Net Zero Energy?

A net zero energy building or operation produces as much energy as it consumes over a year, usually through renewable sources like solar or wind.

Key Characteristics:

Energy-focused, not emissions-focused

Typically measured at the site level

Common in green building certifications

Example:

A commercial office installs rooftop solar panels and generates enough electricity annually to match its energy usage. On paper, it is net zero energy.

But here’s the catch:
That building may still have high carbon emissions due to:

Carbon-intensive construction materials (cement, steel)

Fossil-fuel-based grid electricity during peak hours

Supply chain emissions not accounted for

What Is Net Zero Carbon?

Net zero carbon means that the total greenhouse gas emissions produced are reduced as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions neutralized through verified removals.

Net Zero Carbon Meaning (In Simple Terms):

Measure all emissions → reduce them aggressively → offset only what cannot be eliminated.

This includes:

Operational carbon (energy use)

Embodied carbon (materials, construction, manufacturing)

Value-chain emissions (Scope 3)

Net Zero Energy vs Net Zero Carbon: The Real Difference

Aspect

Net Zero Energy

Net Zero Carbon

Focus

Energy balance

Emissions reduction

Climate impact

Indirect

Direct

Includes embodied carbon

❌ No

✅ Yes

Covers Scope 3 emissions

❌ No

✅ Yes

Risk of greenwashing

High

Lower (if verified)

Key Insight:
A project can be net zero energy and still worsen climate change.

Why Brands Are Getting It Wrong

1. Energy ≠ Emissions

Energy efficiency does not automatically equal carbon reduction, especially in regions where electricity grids are fossil-fuel heavy.

2. Embodied Carbon Is Ignored

According to industry data, up to 50% of a building’s lifetime emissions can come from materials and construction alone.

3. Scope 3 Emissions Are Conveniently Skipped

Scope 3 emissions — often 70–90% of total corporate emissions — are the hardest to measure, so many brands avoid them entirely.

The Greenwashing Problem

Reddit and Quora discussions frequently highlight frustration around sustainability labels that sound impressive but lack substance.

Common examples:

“Net zero energy campus” with no carbon disclosure

“Carbon neutral” claims based purely on offsets

ESG reports without third-party verification

For consumers and investors, this erodes trust.

Why Net Zero Carbon Matters More for the Climate

From a climate science perspective, carbon emissions are the real problem, not energy consumption alone.

According to global climate frameworks:

The world must halve emissions by 2030

Reach net zero carbon by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5°C

Net zero carbon aligns directly with:

Paris Agreement goals

Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

Corporate ESG accountability

Best Practice: Moving From Net Zero Energy to Net Zero Carbon

Smart brands and developers are now:

Measuring full lifecycle emissions

Using low-carbon materials

Electrifying operations with clean grids

Reducing Scope 3 through supplier engagement

Using offsets only as a last resort

Key Takeaway for Brands

If sustainability is part of your brand promise, net zero energy is not enough.

To create real impact — and avoid greenwashing — the focus must shift to net zero carbon, backed by transparent data, verified reporting, and measurable reductions.

The initial deployment will take place at
SWA’s state-of-the-art research and development facility in Jubail at The Water Technologies
Innovation Institute and Research Advancements (WTIIRA), one of the world’s foremost centers
for next-generation desalination technology.
With Saudi Arabia accounting for 22% of global desalination capacity, this milestone project will
establish the foundation for scaling across SWA’s national desalination network, directly
advancing Vision 2030’s goals of environmental sustainability, economic diversification, and
technological innovation.
Ebb enters this partnership with extensive validation from multiple U.S. pilots, including multi-
year demonstrations with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory (PNNL) and Project Macoma in Washington state.
Desalination is essential to the Kingdom’s water security and economic development and
continues to expand rapidly to meet rising demand—with capacity projected to increase 10%
from 16 million to 17.8 million cubic meters per day by 2030. Historically, the brine produced by
desalination has had no value—treated simply as a waste byproduct of freshwater production.
Now, through its partnership with Ebb, the Saudi Water Authority is transforming this brine into a
valuable resource, using innovative electrochemical technology that integrates seamlessly with
existing desalination systems.
Ebb’s electrochemical system converts desalination brine into three valuable products: caustic
soda, hydrochloric acid, and a low-salinity brine that can be recycled back into the desalination
process to extract additional freshwater. Both the caustic soda and acid can be reused within
desalination plants or supplied to nearby industries—including aluminum refining, energy
operations, and other industrial processes critical to the Kingdom’s economy. The caustic soda
can also be used to enhance seawater alkalinity, kickstarting a natural process that permanently
removes CO₂ from the atmosphere. This innovation supports the Kingdom’s broader goal of

SWA’s desalination plants have the
potential to remove 85 megatons of CO₂ each year, directly contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision
2030 Net Zero objectives, while increasing plant efficiency. Beyond carbon removal, the process
also helps restore ocean chemistry by lowering acidity levels caused by excess atmospheric
carbon—benefiting marine ecosystems in the Arabian Gulf. These outcomes build on scientific
studies conducted in the United States, which demonstrated measurable improvements in
ocean chemistry when Ebb’s process is deployed.
“This partnership represents a transformative moment for both desalination and carbon removal.
By integrating Ebb’s technology with SWA’s desalination infrastructure, we’re proving that
addressing water scarcity and climate change aren’t competing priorities—they’re
complementary solutions. SWA’s forward-thinking approach demonstrates how the desalination
industry can unlock immense value and be a critical part of addressing some of the world’s most
complex challenges profitably.” Ben Tarbell, Ebb’s CEO and Co-founder.
“This groundbreaking partnership demonstrates how Saudi Arabia is leveraging its position as
the world’s largest desalinated water producer to create entirely new industries. The technology
can be manufactured locally, creating jobs and reducing our reliance on imported chemicals,
while our deployment establishes a model for the broader GCC region and water-scarce nations
worldwide. We are not simply adopting technology – we are building a domestic carbon removal
industry that supports government priorities’ economic diversification and positions the Kingdom
as an exporter of climate solutions.” Tariq Alghaffari, SWA Vice President for Research &
Promising Technologies.

It has been a decade since the Paris Agreement, that aimed to keep the global warming no more than 2⁰C while pursue efforts to keep it below 1.5⁰C, to reduce emissions by 45% and reach net zero by 2050.

The period from 2016 to 2023 has seen private capital flow majorly into energy, mobility, industry and food.

In Energy, Solar witnessed the highest funding of $21.6bn followed by nuclear fusion $4.8bn; while mobility witnessed $45bn of inflow in EV space alone.

The geography that witnessed the most climate tech VC funding was Europe, followed by USA and China. Overall the climate tech VC investment increased by 12.5x between 2013 to 2023.

As we enter 2025, we are expected to see some developments in technology on which work has been going for a long time now.

1. Energy:

a. The Renewables will continue to see an uptake with increased commitments from corporates to reduce their emissions, also being driven by decreasing cost. Few of the innovations being worked on that we can see in 2025 include:

          i. Floating offshore wind turbines like the Hywind Scotland Project

ii. Hydrogen fuel cells for energy storage

iii. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage

b. Energy Management: With increase in demand for renewables and distributed generation, businesses will have to focus on energy efficiency, fuel switching and low emission technologies. The future will thus lie in energy management solutions and strategic energy purchases. For example, Google’s DeepMind has improved wind farm energy output by 20% using AI powered predictions.

c. Nuclear: The innovation in the space is reaching maturity with small modular reactors and fusion technologies reaching commercial deployment.

Atomic Energy Agency says that over 80 SMR designs are in development worldwide, targeting electricity, heating, water desalination and industrial steam.

Other areas where innovation is moving fast include:

(i) Nuclear fuel designed to be more efficient and exhibit accident tolerant characteristics – molten salt reactors, tristructural isotropic fuel and thorium based reactors.

(ii) Nuclear waste management

The challenge in Energy remains to manage the grid with different sources, making it smart and ensuring seamless supply of electricity.

2. Circular Economy:

Beyond recycling, the circular economy aims to redesign product lifecycles in a way that can be reused, repaired, and remanufactured, viz.,

a) Waste to resource

b) Internet of Waste (use of AI and Machine Learning)

c) Bio-based materials

d) Blockchain (for material tracing)

The key challenge in the circular economy is the adoption. The corporates, the government and policymakers will have to work together to implement strategies to achieve the optimal results for achieving circularity

the circular economy aims to redesign product lifecycles in a way that can be reused

3. Water:

Climate change, as we all know, impacts precipitation patterns leading to frequent and severe droughts. Melting glaciers cause reduced fresh water supply, and salt water contamination due to rising sea levels. To tackle the problem of available freshwater, technology in the works that are promising include:

a. Digital Water Management

b. Waste water treatment- chemical based treatments, membrane filtration, membrane bioreactor, Aerobic treatment

c. De-salinization using reverse osmosis technology

The challenge with implementation of these technologies is that these are energy intensive, while the cost of energy is a major factor, it is imperative that the source is also green. Even if the problem of the cost and energy is solved, all these technologies will have to work together, for instance digital water management alone can’t make a dent in the objective, thereby collaboration of technologies is critical.

4. Food:

The effect of rising temperatures can already be seen in the reduced crop yield. The disruptions caused by climate have a direct effect on prices and transportation making accessibility an issue. While agriculture is one segment, animal-driven food is another sector that has been responsible for a lot of emissions. To tackle these emission areas that shall see growth and are in focus include

a. Alternate Proteins, which shall conƟnue to gain momentum with more focus on hybrid protein blends, precision fermentaƟon, AI driving protein designing

b. In 2024 the world wasted 1.05 bn tones of food or 1/5th of all food available to consumer, in addition to food lost in supply chain. Food waste tracking, food banks, on site food waste composters and optimization of the supply chain shall all continue to gain momentum to tackle this problem

c. Packaging is another focus where innovation in alternate materials is in the works with materials such as algae, and fungi being engineered for production.

The challenges are wide in food, on one hand we need to focus on reducing emissions from reducing consumption of animal based foods thereby focus on alternate proteins, while on the other increasing the yields of crops to ensure food security and ensure reduced food wastage. This is the sector where, we as consumers, can move the needle by modifying our eating habits and ensure minimal wastage.

In 2024 the world wasted 1.05 bn tones of food or 1/5th of all food available to consumer.

5. Artificial Intelligence (AI):

In all the above mentioned sectors, we could see the prominence of AI and how it can play a pivotal role in aiding and increasing the efficiency of technology being adopted. AI shall act as a support to these technologies

It is also believed the growth in the sustainable investment will be driven by Reporting-As sustainability disclosure requirements become compulsory and standardized globally, companies will be scrutinized by stakeholders, consumers and employees and there may be potential penalties for greenwashing. Long-term sustainability goals, beyond 2030, will become more common.

Carbon Markets– Carbon tracking and optimization will gain more momentum in an effort by companies reduce their emissions.

We can expect 2025 to be see breakthrough in innovations and commercialization of the ones already under process.

The Middle East is increasingly paving the way for the global energy transition towards renewable sources. This shift is driven by technological advancements, economic diversification, and a commitment to sustainable development.

Emerging Markets and Energy Demand

Emerging markets, particularly in the Global South, are significantly influencing global energy dynamics. It is projected that by 2050, the global population will increase by 1.7 billion, predominantly in rapidly urbanizing and industrializing economies. This rise is expected to double electricity demand, necessitating a substantial expansion in energy infrastructure. Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, are anticipated to expand sevenfold to meet this demand.

Artificial Intelligence: A Dual Role

Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a dual facet in the energy sector. While AI-driven technologies require substantial computational power, leading to increased energy consumption, they also offer significant potential for optimizing energy production and distribution. AI can enhance efficiency through predictive analytics, thereby contributing to the development of sustainable energy systems.

AI technologies demand high computational power, increasing energy consumption.

Strategic Investments in Renewable Energy

Middle Eastern nations are making strategic investments in renewable energy, low-carbon fuels, and carbon capture technologies. For instance, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has committed to investing $5 billion annually in low-carbon energy and aims for net-zero emissions by 2045. These initiatives are essential steps toward decarbonizing energy systems and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Global Commitments and Policy Frameworks

The global commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels was underscored at the United Nations climate conference, where over 190 governments approved an agreement advocating for this shift. Such international agreements provide a policy framework that encourages investment in renewable energy and supports the global energy transition.

Economic Diversification and Regional Collaboration

The shift towards renewable energy in the Middle East is also driven by economic diversification efforts. By investing in renewable energy technologies, countries in the region aim to reduce their economic dependence on oil exports and create new economic opportunities. This transition has led to increased regional collaboration, with countries sharing knowledge and resources to develop sustainable energy solutions.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the progress, challenges remain in the global energy transition. The current pace and investment levels are insufficient to meet the targets set by the Paris Agreement. Significant increases in renewable investments are necessary, particularly in emerging markets, to achieve global climate targets. Additionally, investments in storage and transmission capacities are essential to ensure a reliable energy mix. Through strategic investments, policy commitments, and regional collaboration, the region is contributing significantly to the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. However, sustained efforts and increased investments are crucial to meet global energy demands and climate targets.

December 26, 2024

Not long ago, Barcelona was plagued by overflowing trash cans & littered streets. Conventional waste systems were failing to keep up with exponentially growing trash volumes. Then something changed. The authorities adopted GPS-enabled waste collection vehicles and installed ‘smart bins’ equipped with sensors. Soon, waste collection and management became efficient, smoother and smarter. Landfills shrank and streets remained clean. Just like that, Barcelona set a prime example of how AI tools & IoT can transform the traditional waste management system.

Today, Barcelona is not the only example. Many cities, corporations and brands globally are implementing AI & IoT to improve their trash management. But why there’s fuss about this transition?

Over 2 billion tons of solid waste are generated worldwide each year.

According to the World Bank, more than 2 billion tons of solid waste is generated worldwide. Most of this waste is not managed properly, which in turn chokes landfills, causes pollution, degrades ecosystems & harms livelihoods. Moreover, this figure is estimated to touch 3.4 billion tons in 2050! Hence, there’s a dire need to adopt technologies like AI & IoT for waste management & for protecting the planet.

Let’s understand how this transformation is changing urban living for the better.

Smart bins for waste collection: Buenos Aires and Singapore are the first cities to have installed smart bins on a large scale. These bins are equipped with sensors that can monitor the capacity of the bin in real time. Once full, they send a signal to collection trucks, thus making trash collection more efficient.

Automated sorting & recycling: Sweden, which is aiming for a net zero landfill strategy, has installed AI-driven, multi-arms robots in its waste segregation units. These robots identify & sort plastics, glass & metals with high accuracy. By adopting and investing in such innovative advancements, Sweden has achieved a 99% landfill diversion rate! In India, Bangalore is working towards opting a similar AI based solution to improve the speed & precision of separation of wet and dry waste.

Optimizing waste collection routes: London and San Francisco are among the cities that are using AI to optimize their waste collection routes. This helps guide vehicles about trash vulnerable routes & reduce fuel consumption & operational costs. Pune & Indore have also adopted GPS-enabled vehicles which follow AI-recommended routes to save time & labour.

Reducing landfill dependence: With the growing awareness about circular economy, AI helps by connecting waste generators with recyclers. A Pune based startup, Recykal is providing a platform for the same. Also, companies such as RecycLiCo in Canada are using AI to process & repurpose lithium-ion battery waste into reusable materials.

Reducing waste leakage: IoT devices & AI algorithms can help monitor waste segregation & disposal practices. This ensures compliance with government policies as well. For example, in Seoul, AI-powered systems track food waste disposal & spread awareness among citizens to reduce waste generation. Megacities in China use AI to predict waste surges, helping authorities, companies & brands plan better. Other notable examples are of cities such as Tokyo, where authorities are using a combination of AI and big data to predict waste generation patterns, particularly around events & holidays. In Los Angeles, AI-powered cameras are monitoring bins, ensuring recycling at the initial most level.

Thus, AI-facilitated practices ranging from smart sorting & route optimization to real-time monitoring & predictive analytics are being adopted by cities around the globe.

But, despite the growing use, implementation of such technologies is challenging. The first challenge is the high cost associated with implementing the technology on a large scale. Additionally, the absence of quality data on waste generation could limit the effectiveness of these AI-led technological solutions which are primarily dependent on data. In India and similar countries, stakeholders such as local municipalities and residents show reluctance to adopt advanced waste segregation methodologies and transition away from traditional systems. To adopt new technologies, human resources handling the waste collection and segregation need to be trained in the operation and maintenance of these systems.

In conclusion, from robotic recyclers in Sweden to smart bins in Barcelona, technology is reshaping how cities handle waste. Waste management is crucial for not only for the environment but also impacts the city’s or country’s public health. Populated countries like India produce around 62 million tons of waste, both recyclable and non–recyclable, every year, with an average annual growth rate of 4%. Hence, this calls for innovating and scaling up tech-based sustainable solutions. For effective implementation of advanced waste management techniques, government and private stakeholders need to collaborate to bring in investment and accountability. For urban planning, embracing AI and advanced technologies for waste management isn’t an option anymore, it’s a necessity for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

December 12th 2024, Auckland New Zealand: 2degrees is stopping Aucklanders in their tracks
today, with a visual demonstration of the speed of climate change. The Answer the call installation
appeared at Takutai Square Britomart overnight, a head-turning ice sculpture made from rainwater
with mobile phones frozen inside.

In response to a climate crisis that cannot be ignored, the installation was created to demonstrate
the speed and scale of climate change and a commitment from 2degrees to reduce its emissions.
Unveiled at three metres high and two metres wide, the installation consists of 49 frozen blocks
and weighs in at more than two tonnes, made of approximately 2500 litres of rainwater.

The Answer the call installation will inevitably melt today in Takutai Square. On the other side of
the globe, in Antarctica and Greenland, the ice predicted to melt this year equates to the scale and
size of roughly 168 billion ice sculpture installations.* The amount of ice that melts each year in our
coldest regions is at such a large scale, it’s almost too hard for the mind to fathom for many. This
installation represents the climate crisis and helps us to understand the scale of the crisis.

“We knew we needed something bold, something that would stop people in their tracks, get them
thinking, engaging and talking about climate change. For us at 2degrees sustainability isn’t just a
checkbox – it’s a core part of what we stand for,” said Mark Callander, 2degrees Chief Executive.
“The installation has been sustainably planned and made from rainwater and the mobile phones
in the sculptures will be able to be used once the ice melts. The phones are being used
symbolically to demonstrate the connection between our industry and the need to act on
climate.”
“We recognise our industry’s impact, which is why we’re taking responsibility to lead by example.
It’s a physical representation of climate change and our commitment to answer the call,”
Callander added.
2degrees has today announced it is the first telecommunications company in New Zealand and
second New Zealand business to achieve validation for its Net Zero 2040 target from global
corporate climate action organisation, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Reaching Net Zero
requires us to reduce 90% of our greenhouse gas emissions and investment in initiatives to
balance out the rest. The targets have been validated by the SBTi in accordance with its Corporate
Net Zero Standard.

Behind the target is a robust emissions reduction strategy across 2degrees’ scope 1, 2 and 3
greenhouse gas emissions, from its 2022 baseline. This includes external audits of the company’s
emissions, cross-functional collaboration across the business, and engagement with its supply
chain partners.
“At 2degrees we are doing our part to combat climate change. We are the first New Zealand
telecommunications company to secure SBTi validation for our bold Net Zero 2040 target;
committing to reaching Net-Zero requires 90% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and
investment in initiatives to balance out the rest. Our targets have been validated by SBTi in
accordance with its Corporate Net Zero Standard,” Callander added.
Answer the call is designed to ignite conversation about climate change and visually
demonstrates 2degrees’ commitment to answering the call. By engaging people visually and
emotionally, 2degrees hopes the installation will inspire both awareness and commitment to
change.

2degrees has a commitment to sustainability, transparency, and climate action and will continue
to promote responsible business practices in New Zealand.
For more information about 2degrees’ sustainability initiatives or to discuss collaboration
opportunities, visit 2degrees.nz/sustainability.

“The Future Sustainability Forum serves as a critical platform that enables global collaboration, knowledge sharing, and finding practical solutions for climate change and sustainable development. In light of COP29 outcomes, we are pleased to announce DIFC’s Decarbonisation Strategy, where we are setting new standards for environmental leadership. We remain at the forefront of solidifying Dubai’s position as the leading sustainable financial city in the region. Today, we are setting a new benchmark for decarbonisation within global financial centres and aim to achieve Net Zero in 2045, five years ahead of the UAE’s targets.” – His Excellency Essa Kazim, Governor of DIFC

Dubai,UAE : 06 December 2024 Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the leading global financial centre in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region, today announced several updates at the 2nd edition of the Future Sustainability Forum, that advance its position as the region’s leading sustainability finance hub.

Building on the outcomes of COP29, the legacy of COP28 with its landmark UAE Consensus, which was hosted in Dubai last year, DIFC has unveiled its Decarbonisation Strategy, reinforcing its commitment to being a sustainability leader in the region. The Centre will play a vital role in contributing to the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative, by committing to achieve its Net Zero targets by 2045. In its Decarbonisation Strategy, DIFC targets reducing emissions in areas it directly controls relating to its operations, construction activities and supply chain, setting an example for financial centres worldwide. DIFC’s Strategy aims to achieve real Net Zero, without offsetting or trading carbon emissions.

The event also served as a platform to launch DIFC’s inaugural Sustainability Progress Report titled ‘Building a Sustainable Future: DIFC’s Path to Impact’ detailing achievements and a roadmap for sustainability.

The Forum also hosted the Climate Tech World Cup. Organised by Trescon and powered by Ignyte, it is a call to action for entrepreneurs, innovators, and visionaries from across the globe. Participants were encouraged to present their ideas and solutions to the pressing environmental challenges of our time. Finalists included Acklo, Baynunah Water generation Technologies, Green Worms, Mahawa, The Surplus, Sirius Energy and Zeroe.

COP29 signified the midpoint of the “COP Presidencies Troika”, a collaborative effort between the UAE (hosted COP28) and Brazil (host to COP30 in 2025) that aims to accelerate progress toward the 1.5°C goal. DIFC’s Future Sustainability Forum and announcements come amidst new targets and outcomes from COP29, which will strengthen the UAE’s efforts to mitigate climate risk.

His Excellency Essa Kazim ,Governor of DIFC, commented: “The Future Sustainability Forum serves as a critical platform that enables global collaboration, knowledge sharing, and finding practical solutions for climate change and sustainable development. In light of COP29 outcomes, we are pleased to announce DIFC’s Decarbonisation Strategy, where we are setting new standards for environmental leadership. We remain at the forefront of solidifying Dubai’s position as the leading sustainable financial city in the region. Today, we are setting a new benchmark for decarbonisation within global financial centres and aim to achieve Net Zero in 2045, five years ahead of the UAE’s targets.”

Figures from Bloomberg’s Capital Markets League Tables has showed that annual issuances of green social, sustainable, and sustainability-linked bonds (GSSB) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in 2023 hit a new record of USD 24bn, driven by the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The UAE leads regional green bond issuance, recently reaching USD 10.7bn, up nearly 170 per cent and capturing approximately 45 per cent of regional totals.

As a leader in global climate action, the UAE has strengthened its role in driving efforts to mobilise climate finance with several global initiatives. These efforts advance the global climate agenda, further international co-operation in environmental sustainability, and support the green transition. DIFC is also bolstering its position as a regional and global hub for sustainable finance, innovation, and leadership, building on the dialogues initiated during COP28 and enhanced through COP29.

Launched during COP28, the DIFC Sustainable Finance Catalyst is a cornerstone initiative in supporting start-ups and innovation in the sustainable economy by scaling sustainable financial flows from Dubai to USD 100bn by 2030, enabled by the first AI-driven sustainability knowledge hub. A workstream for the Future Sustainability Forum will be added to the 2025 Dubai FinTech Summit, creating opportunities for cross-sectoral growth between sustainability, ESG and innovation.

Bringing together 3,000 industry leaders, government officials, and sustainability experts to explore innovative solutions for achieving net-zero targets, advancing sustainable finance, and driving sustainability-led innovation, the Future Sustainability Summit hosted over 500 global investors and more than 100 speakers.

About Dubai International Financial Centre

Dubai, UAE: 05 December 2024: Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the leading global financial centre in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region, today welcomed more than 3,000 industry leaders, government officials, and sustainability experts to the 2nd Future Sustainability Summit 2024. The event convened global experts to ideate, collaborate and inspire with insights, to accelerate the global transition towards a low-carbon, climate-resilient future, and showcase the UAE’s sustainable practices, specifically in the financial environment.

The first day of the Future Sustainability Forum showcased thought leadership in panel discussions on topics including facilitation and development of green financing mechanisms, enhancing stakeholder engagement for sustainable development, decarbonisation of the energy sector, prominence of building a circular economy, ESG reporting, and a roadmap to a sustainable 2025. The second day of the event will see industry-focused discussions surrounding innovation, digital transformation and smart cities.

The event attracted 100 global speakers from 50-plus countries, highlighting the importance of the UAE’s sustainability initiatives. Notable speakers at the event included H.E Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group Chief Executive Office, Emirates Steel Arkan (EMSTEEL), Eng. Yousif Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Water & Electricity (EtihadWE), Capt. Saif Al Mheiri, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Sustainability Office, Abu Dhabi Maritime and AD Ports Group, Yasser Zaghloul, Group Chief Executive Officer, National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC), Dr. Manfred Braunl, Chief Executive Officer, Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, Dr. Bernd Van Linder, Chief Executive Officer, Commercial Bank of Dubai, Vijay Bains, Chief Sustainability Officer and Group Head of ESG, Emirates NBD, Oliver Philips, Regional Head of Sustainable Finance, Middle East and Africa, Barclays, and Jane Goodland, Group Head of Sustainability, London Stock Exchange Group.

Among the attendees were over 500 global investors, and more than 20 per cent of those investors represent funds with portfolios of USD100mn and above. This robust investor presence emphasised a strong focus on climate technology and renewable energy, underscoring the forum’s role in driving sustainable investment and actionable insights in these critical areas.

Alya Al Zarouni,Chief Operating Officer at DIFC Authority and Co-Chair of the Dubai Sustainable Finance Working Group, commented, “DIFC is committed to establishing synergies worldwide with governments, organisations, industries, investors and more, to drive the transition to Net Zero with sustainable finance mechanisms. The Future Sustainability Forum enables this transition through collaboration and knowledge sharing that inspires learning. Sustainability requires innovation, considerable finance, education, reporting, and capacity building. At DIFC, we are poised to reinforce our leadership in contributing to the UAE’s climate action strategies and economic development by driving the future of finance.”

Since the UAE ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016 to contribute to climate action, there has been considerable progress in transitioning the country to a more sustainable, climate-resilient, and low-carbon economy. The UAE’s Net Zero agenda is a long-term plan aiming to achieve the sustainable development goals within the country. As a result, sustainable finance has been gaining momentum evidenced by the growth in green bond issuance, implementation of key international and regional projects to foster sustainability and other decarbonisation initiatives within the finance sector.

Dubai – and DIFC – have championed efforts towards driving climate finance mobilisation in the region. At COP28, DIFC announced the launch of its Sustainable Finance Catalyst, a strategic initiative to grow sustainable finance flows from Dubai to USD100 bn by 2030. The future of sustainability lies in innovation, global collaboration, and the transition to a circular economy.
