Sustainability is no longer a side initiative for manufacturers. It’s becoming a core business strategy that influences everything from production efficiency and operating costs to supply chain resilience and customer trust. As governments tighten environmental regulations and buyers demand greater transparency, manufacturers are investing in technologies that deliver measurable environmental and operational improvements.

The numbers reflect this shift. The global sustainable manufacturing market was valued at approximately USD 231.86 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 601.17 billion by 2034, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.1%. At the same time, a 2026 manufacturing leadership survey found that adoption of digital manufacturing platforms increased from 86% of manufacturers in 2024 to 97% in 2026. Nearly three-quarters of respondents now consider sustainability a top operational priority, while 96% report that sustainability directly influences sourcing and procurement decisions.

Behind this transformation are technologies that don’t just promise sustainability—they generate verifiable data that manufacturers, investors, regulators, and customers can measure.

What Are Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies?

Sustainable manufacturing technologies are digital and energy-efficient production systems designed to reduce emissions, material waste, energy consumption, and environmental impact while improving productivity and product quality. Unlike traditional manufacturing upgrades that focus solely on output, these technologies help manufacturers optimize resources, monitor environmental performance in real time, and support long-term ESG and decarbonization goals.

Among the many innovations shaping modern factories, three technologies are delivering the most measurable results in 2026.

1. Digital Twins: Making Manufacturing Smarter and More Efficient

A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical production line, machine, or manufacturing facility. By continuously collecting data from connected sensors, manufacturers can simulate operations, predict equipment failures, optimize production schedules, and identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption before problems occur.

Today, nearly 48% of manufacturers worldwide have adopted digital twin technology in some form, making it one of the fastest-growing tools in smart manufacturing.

Its impact is significant:

Energy savings of up to 30% through real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance.

A documented 7% reduction in carbon emissions and 5% improvement in on-time order fulfillment after implementing production optimization through digital twins.

Better equipment utilization, fewer unexpected shutdowns, and lower maintenance costs.

According to the International Energy Agency, reducing industrial emissions by just 1% would prevent approximately 90 million tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere each year—roughly equivalent to removing 20 million gasoline-powered cars from the road. Digital twins are increasingly becoming one of the most effective technologies helping manufacturers achieve that goal.

2. Additive Manufacturing: Producing More While Wasting Less

Also known as 3D printing, additive manufacturing creates components layer by layer instead of removing material from larger blocks through traditional machining. This approach dramatically reduces raw material waste while allowing manufacturers to produce lighter, more complex, and highly customized parts.

The environmental benefits are already well documented.

For example, Boeing’s life-cycle assessments found that replacing conventionally manufactured brackets with 3D-printed components for its 787 Dreamliner reduced:

Carbon emissions by 30%–39%

Landfill waste

Hazardous material use

Water consumption

Energy consumption

Across manufacturing sectors, additive manufacturing can reduce material waste by 30% to 90%, depending on the product and production process. In aerospace, waste reductions of up to 70% have been reported for certain components, while automotive, healthcare, and industrial equipment manufacturers are increasingly adopting the technology to improve both sustainability and supply chain flexibility.

3. AI and Energy-Efficient Manufacturing Equipment

Artificial intelligence is transforming manufacturing by helping factories make thousands of operational decisions every day based on real-time production data.

AI-powered systems can:

Optimize machine performance

Reduce unnecessary energy consumption

Predict maintenance needs before failures occur

Improve production scheduling

Detect quality issues earlier

Monitor emissions continuously

Combined with modern energy-efficient machinery, these systems allow manufacturers to improve sustainability without completely rebuilding existing facilities.

This trend is reflected in investment levels. North America alone accounted for an estimated USD 44.8 billion of the sustainable manufacturing equipment market in 2025, highlighting the growing emphasis on retrofitting existing factories rather than replacing them entirely.

Sustainable Manufacturing by the Numbers

Metric

Latest Figure

Global sustainable manufacturing market (2025)

USD 231.86 billion

Projected market size (2034)

USD 601.17 billion

Market CAGR

11.1%

Digital manufacturing platform adoption

97% of manufacturers

Digital twin adoption

Approximately 48%

Energy savings from digital twins

Up to 30%

Carbon reduction in digital twin case study

7%

Material savings through additive manufacturing

30%–90%

Waste reduction in aerospace applications

Up to 70%

Why These Technologies Matter Beyond Sustainability

The biggest shift isn’t simply that manufacturers are becoming more environmentally responsible. It’s that sustainability is becoming measurable.

Instead of relying on broad environmental claims, manufacturers can now demonstrate performance through verified operational data, including:

Real-time energy consumption

Carbon emissions tracking

Material utilization rates

Equipment efficiency

Predictive maintenance records

Waste reduction metrics

This level of transparency supports regulatory compliance, strengthens ESG reporting, improves procurement decisions, and builds greater trust with customers and investors.

For manufacturers, sustainability is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage rather than a compliance exercise.

Challenges Manufacturers Still Face

Despite rapid adoption, implementing sustainable manufacturing technologies isn’t without challenges. Many organizations continue to face:

High upfront investment costs

Integration with legacy production systems

Skills shortages in AI and digital manufacturing

Cybersecurity concerns surrounding connected factories

Data quality and interoperability issues across production systems

However, declining technology costs and stronger return-on-investment models are making these solutions more accessible across industries.

The Future of Sustainable Manufacturing

As manufacturing continues to embrace digital transformation, technologies such as digital twins, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, industrial IoT, and predictive analytics will play an even greater role in reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.

The future factory will be defined not only by what it produces, but by how efficiently it uses energy, materials, and data.

Organizations that invest in measurable sustainability today will be better positioned to meet evolving regulations, strengthen supply chain resilience, and respond to growing customer expectations for transparent environmental performance.

Ultimately, sustainable manufacturing is moving beyond ambition to accountability. Every kilowatt-hour saved, every tonne of material reused, and every reduction in emissions can now be measured, verified, and communicated with confidence. That data-driven approach is transforming sustainability from a corporate commitment into a measurable business advantage.

Consumer technology has become inseparable from modern living. Smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, speakers, and smart home devices define how we work, communicate, and manage our daily routines.

However, behind this convenience lies a growing environmental cost — from resource extraction and energy-intensive manufacturing to the rising global problem of electronic waste.

Eco-friendly consumer technology is emerging as a response to this imbalance. The goal is no longer just creating smarter devices, but designing responsible gadgets that support a greener and more sustainable lifestyle.

As sustainability becomes a priority for consumers and governments alike, environmentally conscious technology is quickly transforming how devices are designed, produced, and used.

What Is Eco-Friendly Consumer Tech?

Eco-friendly consumer tech refers to electronic devices designed to reduce environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.

These devices focus on:

energy efficiency

sustainable materials

longer product lifespan

repairability and recyclability

Examples include solar chargers, smart home energy systems, repairable smartphones, and electronics made using recycled materials.

Instead of encouraging constant upgrades, sustainable technology emphasizes durability, efficiency, and responsible consumption.

The Hidden Environmental Impact of Electronics

The global electronics industry produces millions of tonnes of electronic waste every year. Many devices are discarded long before the end of their useful life due to limited repair options or frequent upgrade cycles.

Manufacturing electronics also requires rare minerals, metals, and energy-intensive processes that contribute to carbon emissions.

Green electronics aim to reduce this impact by focusing on longer device lifespans and recyclable materials. Designing products that last longer can significantly reduce lifecycle emissions and slow the growth of e-waste.

For example, learning how to reduce electronic waste can help consumers make more responsible purchasing decisions.

Repairable and Modular Devices Reduce E-Waste

One of the most important shifts in sustainable technology is modular design.

Devices with replaceable batteries, repairable screens, and upgradeable components extend product lifespan and reduce unnecessary waste.

The global right-to-repair movement is also pushing manufacturers to make spare parts, manuals, and repair tools more accessible to consumers.

Benefits of repairable devices include:

longer product usability

reduced electronic waste

lower environmental footprint

Instead of replacing an entire device, users can simply repair or upgrade individual components.

Energy Efficient Technology for Sustainable Living

Energy consumption during everyday device use also contributes to environmental impact.

Modern eco-friendly gadgets are increasingly designed with energy-efficient processors, low standby power modes, and intelligent energy management systems.

Examples include:

smart plugs

energy monitoring dashboards

low-power computing chips

energy-efficient appliances

These tools allow households to track and optimize electricity usage in real time.

For those interested in building a greener home, exploring smart home energy devices can help significantly reduce energy waste and lower electricity bills.

Sustainable Materials in Modern Electronics

Material innovation plays a major role in the development of green electronics.

Manufacturers are now incorporating more sustainable materials such as:

recycled aluminum

reclaimed plastics

bio-based polymers

Packaging is also evolving. Many technology brands are reducing plastic usage and switching to recyclable or minimal packaging to reduce shipping emissions.

Circular economy initiatives are also becoming more common. Many companies now offer device recycling programs, refurbishment services, and trade-in options to recover valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements.

These initiatives help support the growth of a circular technology economy, where materials are reused rather than discarded.

Solar Powered Gadgets and Renewable Energy Devices

Renewable energy integration is another growing trend in eco-friendly consumer technology.

Portable solar chargers, solar power banks, and energy-efficient batteries allow devices to be powered using clean energy instead of fossil-fuel-based electricity.

Some examples of renewable tech gadgets include:

portable solar chargers

solar powered power banks

kinetic energy wearables

off-grid charging stations

Solar technology is especially useful for travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and people living in areas with limited grid access.

Learning about solar powered gadgets can help consumers adopt more sustainable energy solutions in their everyday lives.

Smart Home Technology for Sustainable Living

Eco-friendly technology is also transforming modern homes.

Smart home systems use real-time data and automation to reduce energy and resource consumption.

Examples include:

smart thermostats that optimize heating and cooling

automated lighting systems that reduce electricity waste

water monitoring devices that track household usage

home energy dashboards that provide consumption insights

These technologies help households make smarter decisions about energy use while reducing their overall carbon footprint.

As a result, smart homes are becoming an important part of sustainable living.

Why Consumers Are Choosing Sustainable Technology

Consumers today are more informed and increasingly values-driven.

Many buyers now prioritize brands that demonstrate clear commitments to sustainability, ethical sourcing, and responsible manufacturing.

Sustainable technology is no longer just a niche preference — it reflects a broader shift toward conscious consumption and environmentally responsible innovation.

For brands, sustainability is becoming both a competitive advantage and a regulatory necessity.

For consumers, eco-friendly gadgets offer a simple way to reduce environmental impact without sacrificing performance or convenience.

The Future of Green Consumer Technology

The future of consumer technology will not be defined only by speed, size, or processing power.

Instead, innovation will increasingly be measured by:

lifecycle environmental impact

energy efficiency

material sustainability

product longevity

Eco-friendly consumer technology proves that performance and sustainability can coexist.

A greener lifestyle does not require abandoning technology.

It requires rethinking how technology is designed, produced, and used.

As environmental awareness grows, sustainable gadgets will continue to shape the next generation of consumer innovation.

It has been a decade since the Paris Agreement, that aimed to keep the global warming no more than 2⁰C while pursue efforts to keep it below 1.5⁰C, to reduce emissions by 45% and reach net zero by 2050.

The period from 2016 to 2023 has seen private capital flow majorly into energy, mobility, industry and food.

In Energy, Solar witnessed the highest funding of $21.6bn followed by nuclear fusion $4.8bn; while mobility witnessed $45bn of inflow in EV space alone.

The geography that witnessed the most climate tech VC funding was Europe, followed by USA and China. Overall the climate tech VC investment increased by 12.5x between 2013 to 2023.

As we enter 2025, we are expected to see some developments in technology on which work has been going for a long time now.

1. Energy:

a. The Renewables will continue to see an uptake with increased commitments from corporates to reduce their emissions, also being driven by decreasing cost. Few of the innovations being worked on that we can see in 2025 include:

          i. Floating offshore wind turbines like the Hywind Scotland Project

ii. Hydrogen fuel cells for energy storage

iii. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage

b. Energy Management: With increase in demand for renewables and distributed generation, businesses will have to focus on energy efficiency, fuel switching and low emission technologies. The future will thus lie in energy management solutions and strategic energy purchases. For example, Google’s DeepMind has improved wind farm energy output by 20% using AI powered predictions.

c. Nuclear: The innovation in the space is reaching maturity with small modular reactors and fusion technologies reaching commercial deployment.

Atomic Energy Agency says that over 80 SMR designs are in development worldwide, targeting electricity, heating, water desalination and industrial steam.

Other areas where innovation is moving fast include:

(i) Nuclear fuel designed to be more efficient and exhibit accident tolerant characteristics – molten salt reactors, tristructural isotropic fuel and thorium based reactors.

(ii) Nuclear waste management

The challenge in Energy remains to manage the grid with different sources, making it smart and ensuring seamless supply of electricity.

2. Circular Economy:

Beyond recycling, the circular economy aims to redesign product lifecycles in a way that can be reused, repaired, and remanufactured, viz.,

a) Waste to resource

b) Internet of Waste (use of AI and Machine Learning)

c) Bio-based materials

d) Blockchain (for material tracing)

The key challenge in the circular economy is the adoption. The corporates, the government and policymakers will have to work together to implement strategies to achieve the optimal results for achieving circularity

the circular economy aims to redesign product lifecycles in a way that can be reused

3. Water:

Climate change, as we all know, impacts precipitation patterns leading to frequent and severe droughts. Melting glaciers cause reduced fresh water supply, and salt water contamination due to rising sea levels. To tackle the problem of available freshwater, technology in the works that are promising include:

a. Digital Water Management

b. Waste water treatment- chemical based treatments, membrane filtration, membrane bioreactor, Aerobic treatment

c. De-salinization using reverse osmosis technology

The challenge with implementation of these technologies is that these are energy intensive, while the cost of energy is a major factor, it is imperative that the source is also green. Even if the problem of the cost and energy is solved, all these technologies will have to work together, for instance digital water management alone can’t make a dent in the objective, thereby collaboration of technologies is critical.

4. Food:

The effect of rising temperatures can already be seen in the reduced crop yield. The disruptions caused by climate have a direct effect on prices and transportation making accessibility an issue. While agriculture is one segment, animal-driven food is another sector that has been responsible for a lot of emissions. To tackle these emission areas that shall see growth and are in focus include

a. Alternate Proteins, which shall conƟnue to gain momentum with more focus on hybrid protein blends, precision fermentaƟon, AI driving protein designing

b. In 2024 the world wasted 1.05 bn tones of food or 1/5th of all food available to consumer, in addition to food lost in supply chain. Food waste tracking, food banks, on site food waste composters and optimization of the supply chain shall all continue to gain momentum to tackle this problem

“The Future Sustainability Forum serves as a critical platform that enables global collaboration, knowledge sharing, and finding practical solutions for climate change and sustainable development. In light of COP29 outcomes, we are pleased to announce DIFC’s Decarbonisation Strategy, where we are setting new standards for environmental leadership. We remain at the forefront of solidifying Dubai’s position as the leading sustainable financial city in the region. Today, we are setting a new benchmark for decarbonisation within global financial centres and aim to achieve Net Zero in 2045, five years ahead of the UAE’s targets.” – His Excellency Essa Kazim, Governor of DIFC

Dubai,UAE : 06 December 2024 Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the leading global financial centre in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region, today announced several updates at the 2nd edition of the Future Sustainability Forum, that advance its position as the region’s leading sustainability finance hub.

Building on the outcomes of COP29, the legacy of COP28 with its landmark UAE Consensus, which was hosted in Dubai last year, DIFC has unveiled its Decarbonisation Strategy, reinforcing its commitment to being a sustainability leader in the region. The Centre will play a vital role in contributing to the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative, by committing to achieve its Net Zero targets by 2045. In its Decarbonisation Strategy, DIFC targets reducing emissions in areas it directly controls relating to its operations, construction activities and supply chain, setting an example for financial centres worldwide. DIFC’s Strategy aims to achieve real Net Zero, without offsetting or trading carbon emissions.

The event also served as a platform to launch DIFC’s inaugural Sustainability Progress Report titled ‘Building a Sustainable Future: DIFC’s Path to Impact’ detailing achievements and a roadmap for sustainability.

The Forum also hosted the Climate Tech World Cup. Organised by Trescon and powered by Ignyte, it is a call to action for entrepreneurs, innovators, and visionaries from across the globe. Participants were encouraged to present their ideas and solutions to the pressing environmental challenges of our time. Finalists included Acklo, Baynunah Water generation Technologies, Green Worms, Mahawa, The Surplus, Sirius Energy and Zeroe.

COP29 signified the midpoint of the “COP Presidencies Troika”, a collaborative effort between the UAE (hosted COP28) and Brazil (host to COP30 in 2025) that aims to accelerate progress toward the 1.5°C goal. DIFC’s Future Sustainability Forum and announcements come amidst new targets and outcomes from COP29, which will strengthen the UAE’s efforts to mitigate climate risk.

His Excellency Essa Kazim ,Governor of DIFC, commented: “The Future Sustainability Forum serves as a critical platform that enables global collaboration, knowledge sharing, and finding practical solutions for climate change and sustainable development. In light of COP29 outcomes, we are pleased to announce DIFC’s Decarbonisation Strategy, where we are setting new standards for environmental leadership. We remain at the forefront of solidifying Dubai’s position as the leading sustainable financial city in the region. Today, we are setting a new benchmark for decarbonisation within global financial centres and aim to achieve Net Zero in 2045, five years ahead of the UAE’s targets.”

Figures from Bloomberg’s Capital Markets League Tables has showed that annual issuances of green social, sustainable, and sustainability-linked bonds (GSSB) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in 2023 hit a new record of USD 24bn, driven by the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The UAE leads regional green bond issuance, recently reaching USD 10.7bn, up nearly 170 per cent and capturing approximately 45 per cent of regional totals.

As a leader in global climate action, the UAE has strengthened its role in driving efforts to mobilise climate finance with several global initiatives. These efforts advance the global climate agenda, further international co-operation in environmental sustainability, and support the green transition. DIFC is also bolstering its position as a regional and global hub for sustainable finance, innovation, and leadership, building on the dialogues initiated during COP28 and enhanced through COP29.

Launched during COP28, the DIFC Sustainable Finance Catalyst is a cornerstone initiative in supporting start-ups and innovation in the sustainable economy by scaling sustainable financial flows from Dubai to USD 100bn by 2030, enabled by the first AI-driven sustainability knowledge hub. A workstream for the Future Sustainability Forum will be added to the 2025 Dubai FinTech Summit, creating opportunities for cross-sectoral growth between sustainability, ESG and innovation.

Bringing together 3,000 industry leaders, government officials, and sustainability experts to explore innovative solutions for achieving net-zero targets, advancing sustainable finance, and driving sustainability-led innovation, the Future Sustainability Summit hosted over 500 global investors and more than 100 speakers.

About Dubai International Financial Centre

Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) is one of the world’s most advanced financial centres, and the leading financial hub for the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA), which comprises 77 countries with an approximate population of 3.7bn and an estimated GDP of USD 10.5trn.

With a 20-year track record of facilitating trade and investment flows across the MEASA region, the Centre connects these fast-growing markets with the economies of Asia, Europe, and the Americas through Dubai.

DIFC is home to an internationally recognised, independent regulator and a proven judicial system with an English common law framework, as well as the region’s largest financial ecosystem of 43,800 professionals working across over 6,150 active registered companies – making up the largest and most diverse pool of industry talent in the region.

Mehlam Murtaza is the Executive Director of UNS Vertical Farms, part of Speedex Group, leading sustainable agriculture in the GCC. Established in 2018, UNS Farms leverages advanced vertical farming to provide fresh, locally grown produce year-round in the UAE.

Under Mehlam’s leadership, the farm specializes in high-quality fruits, vegetables, and microgreens while focusing on reducing environmental impact and promoting food security. With innovation and sustainability at its core, UNS Farms delivers fresh, nutritious produce 365 days a year.

With a focus on sustainability and innovation, Mehlam is driving a new era of agriculture that balances health, quality, and environmental stewardship.

To gain deeper insights into the impact and vision of UNS Farms, our Editor-In-Chief, Prachi Bishnoi, sat down with Mr. Mehlam Murtaza. In this conversation, he discusses his journey, the challenges faced, and the future of sustainability in Dubai.

Q.1 UNS Vertical Farms has become a leader in sustainable urban agriculture. Can you share what inspired you to pursue vertical farming and how it aligns with the environmental goals of the GCC region?

UNS Vertical Farms, a division of Speedex Group since 2018, is the pioneer leader in vertical farming in the UAE region. We are inspired with the idea of how we can provide fresh, nutritious, affordable food to urban populations while minimizing environmental impact.

We wanted to bring traditional agriculture to the urban lands with a twist of technology keeping our foundation in mind. Traditional agriculture requires vast amounts of land and water and is dependent on weather and the use of chemicals and pesticides. With vertical farming, we saw an opportunity to grow high-quality produce sustainably by using the Hydroponics technique and Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). We also reduce transportation, thereby cutting down on emissions and waste.

We align with the UAE’s sustainability goals, including reducing carbon emissions by 70% and water consumption by 30% by 2050, as well as the Green Agenda 2030’s commitment to sustainable resource use.

Ultimately, UNS Vertical Farms is driven by a vision to create a future where fresh, local food can thrive within urban landscapes, benefiting both people and the planet.

Q.2 Vertical farming is known for its efficiency in resource usage, especially water. Could you explain how UNS Farms’ hydroponic system works and its impact on water conservation compared to traditional farming?

The reason for leveraging hydroponics technology in UNS Farms is that hydroponics is the cultivation of plants with water and nutrient solutions rather than soil. The roots grow into a liquid solution that is fortified with all the essential nutrients for healthy plants. It’s particularly transformative when it comes to water conservation. Unlike traditional farming, which wastes water through runoff and evaporation, our system recirculates water in a closed loop. Thus, we are able to use 90% less water than conventional farming. Every drop is accounted for, recirculated, and reused.

Q.3 Food security is a significant challenge globally and particularly in the GCC. How does UNS Vertical Farms contribute to enhancing local food security, and what role does sustainability play in that mission?

The available land is steadily decreasing due to urbanization, deforestation, and soil degradation. At the same time, climate changes, and natural calamities like droughts to floods, make consistent food production increasingly challenging. At UNS Vertical Farms, we see ourselves as part of the solution to this challenge, providing fresh, nutrient-dense, and affordable produce all around the year – right here in the region. By leveraging technology-driven farming solutions with Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), we are transforming environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable, localized food production. This approach can be implemented anywhere in the world.

Q.4 UNS Farms produces a wide range of pesticide-free, nutrient-rich vegetables. How do your farming practices support both environmental health and consumer wellness?

Our vertical farming practices are designed to support both environmentally healthy and consumer wellness. Our methods eliminate the use of harmful chemicals, and the produce we receive is as close to its natural state as possible. Additionally, we also conserve water.

We prioritize sourcing recyclable materials for our operations to ensure they can be repurposed at the end of their lifecycle. We collaborate with paper recycling plants to repurpose our cardboard and paper, minimizing waste. Additionally, we compost our organic waste, which is either reused as input for our farming or sold to local home gardeners for their use. This commitment to circular practices helps reduce our environmental impact and supports sustainable resource management.

We believe nourishment begins with how food is grown. Our vegetables are nutrient-rich and pesticide-free, offering a choice that’s better for both our customers and the planet.

At the UNS Vertical Farms vegetables are nutrient-rich and pesticide-free

Q.6 Could you talk about the decision to use urban spaces for farming and how UNS Farms is helping redefine the landscape of agriculture in urban settings?

Our decision to utilize urban spaces is laid in our name UNS ie. U-Urban N- Nutritious S-Sustainable Farming.

Urban farming minimizes the long-distance transport that conventional agriculture relies on, which not only reduces carbon emissions but also ensures that people get fresher food. Vertical farming enables greater quantities with the same available space.

At UNS Farms, we are redefining what agriculture can look like in urban settings that can produce vertically, which allows us to maximize space eliminating the dependency on natural climatic conditions. Thus, we can produce herbs, microfibers, edible flowers, etc all around the year.

A glimpse into sustainable urban agriculture at UNS Vertical Farms in Dubai

Q.7 What challenges do you face in maintaining sustainability standards while scaling production, and how do you overcome them?

One of the key challenges we face in maintaining sustainability while scaling production is managing the energy consumption of our farms. Artificial lighting, climate control, and other necessary equipment require significant energy, and we have a vision to adapt to renewable resources for our consumption. Thus, we are also exploring more energy-efficient technologies for lighting and climate control.

Q.8 With a growing population, urban agriculture is a vital solution. What are your future plans to expand UNS Farms’ impact on sustainable food production in the region?

A growing population has a growing need. But since we have limited resources we need the intervention of technology and have smart solutions to fulfill the requirements. Urban agriculture is a similar initiative with the ability to produce more with limited resources.
We act as a solution by increasing food production with optimal use of limited resources. Our plan is not just to produce but to lead a shift toward greener cities and food systems that are healthier, more resilient, and closer to the people they serve.

Looking ahead, one of our biggest plans is to expand our network of urban farms across the GCC region. We’re focused on setting up more facilities in key urban centers so we can meet the demand for fresh, local produce without relying on long supply chains.

By expanding our reach, innovating our methods, and engaging with communities, we hope to drive real change in how food is produced, consumed, and valued.

Q.8 How does UNS Farms engage with the local community to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and the benefits of locally grown food?

We engage the community through farm visits and tours, offering students and local groups a hands-on understanding of how food is grown in a controlled environment, from seed to harvest. These experiences spark curiosity and appreciation for locally grown produce.

Through workshops, events like farmers’ markets and organic expos, and partnerships with schools and community organizations, we educate and empower people to make sustainable choices.

On social media, we share tips, recipes, and insights into our farming process, making fresh, local produce approachable and relevant to urban lifestyles.

Q.9 What advice would you give to other agricultural enterprises in the region aiming to adopt more sustainable practices?

For any agricultural enterprise looking to adopt more sustainable practices, my first piece of advice would be to start small and build from there.

Adopt Smart Farming Technologies

Enhance Water and Energy Efficiency: Implement drip irrigation, water recycling, and renewable energy solutions to reduce environmental impact.

Collaborate for Innovation: Partner with research institutions and community groups to scale sustainable practices and share knowledge.

Educate and Inspire: Engage communities through workshops and awareness programs to promote sustainable farming and consumption habits.

The COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, illuminated the urgent need for sustainable solutions to address the intensifying climate crisis. World leaders, activists, and negotiators gathered to discuss pathways to mitigate climate change, adapt to its impacts, and balance economic realities with environmental imperatives. Against the backdrop of powerful speeches and bold commitments, the summit highlighted how innovative approaches could translate ambitions into actionable outcomes.

Unveiling Transformative Climate Finance Mechanisms

One of the cornerstone themes of COP29 was addressing the persistent inadequacies in global climate finance. A draft framework introduced during the summit called for a monumental $1.3 trillion in annual funding by 2030, a tenfold increase from the now-expired $100 billion target established in 2009. This proposal underscores the scale of resources necessary to equip vulnerable nations with the tools for adaptation and resilience.

The new framework presented a hybrid model of financial responsibility, combining contributions from historically high-emitting developed nations with emerging economies. This structure aims to align with the principle of shared but differentiated responsibilities. While ambitious, the proposal resonated deeply with nations grappling with climate-induced disasters, offering hope for more equitable and effective support.

Sustainable Energy Transitions: Nuclear Energy as a Green Pillar

Nuclear energy emerged as a focal point for sustainable energy transitions at COP29. Six new nations endorsed the Declaration to Triple Global Nuclear Capacity by 2050, reflecting its perceived role as a low-carbon, reliable solution to meeting global energy demands. This initiative, supported by significant public and private investment, positions nuclear energy as a critical complement to renewables, particularly in countries with energy reliability challenges.

Dr. Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, emphasized nuclear energy’s dual potential to mitigate emissions and stabilize energy markets. However, questions remain about the long-term management of nuclear waste and the accessibility of nuclear technologies to developing economies.

Championing Locally-Led Climate Adaptation

While top-down solutions often dominate climate negotiations, COP29 gave significant attention to locally-led adaptation initiatives. The Global Center on Adaptation recognized grassroots efforts addressing food and water security, urban climate resilience, and sustainable entrepreneurship. These initiatives demonstrated the transformative power of local solutions when supported by robust global financing.

For instance, Kiribati’s solar-powered water farms and Buenos Aires’ nature-based urban cooling strategies highlighted how small-scale projects could yield outsized benefits for vulnerable communities. The recognition of these projects reinforces the need to channel more adaptation finance to locally-driven efforts.

Tackling the Influence of Fossil Fuel Lobbyists

Amid the optimism, COP29 faced criticism for its overwhelming fossil fuel lobbyist presence, outnumbering delegates from the most climate-vulnerable nations. Activists accused lobbyists of perpetuating greenwashing, evident in their push for carbon capture technologies while resisting systemic fossil fuel phase-outs. This tension between progressive agendas and entrenched industry interests underscored the complexities of achieving meaningful systemic change.

Building Momentum for Green Solutions

COP29 reaffirmed the importance of integrating innovative technologies and green practices across sectors. From scaling renewable energy infrastructure to advancing carbon credit markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, the summit showcased how well-designed systems could unlock significant environmental and economic benefits.

Notable progress included the establishment of a carbon credit framework aimed at mobilizing investments in emissions-reduction projects in developing nations. This approach not only promotes sustainable development but also emphasizes accountability, ensuring that credits represent verifiable environmental impact.

Conclusion: A Path Forward

COP29 in Baku marked a pivotal moment in the global climate dialogue, reflecting both the opportunities and challenges inherent in addressing the climate crisis. The emphasis on scalable, sustainable solutions demonstrated a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of global efforts. However, achieving these goals will require bridging divides in finance, governance, and industry practices.

As the summit transitions into actionable commitments, it serves as a reminder that sustainable solutions are not just an aspiration—they are a necessity. Whether through innovative energy transitions, locally-led initiatives, or equitable climate finance, the steps taken at COP29 offer a blueprint for a more resilient and sustainable future.

Why Climate Resilient Infrastructure?
Climate change in the past 10 years has been severe. As per numerous reports 2015- 2022 was the warmest on record even though for the past three years there has been a cooling impact of La Nina events. Climate change as a whole can damage an established infrastructure.

Infrastructure lies at the spine and heart of economies. Water, buildings, waste systems, and transportation plays important roles for the household and businesses. Infrastructure changes the whole economic base of both developed and developing nations. Efficient, clean, well-developed infrastructure promotes a high quality of life in developed countries in comparison to developing nations.

Climate- Resilient infrastructure is vital in playing the role in addressing the difficult challenges put up by climate change. It is the planning, designing, and construction of infrastructure that can withstand the impact of climate change and its variability.

Existing Infrastructure: A big challenge for Climate change

Existing infrastructure like transportation where roads and aviation bring challenges to climate change. Air and road transportation makes up 23% of CO2 emissions making up the major contributor to climate change. Despite that transports are also vulnerable, in the USA, New Jersey Transit lost US 120 million dollars due to Hurricane Sandy. Similarly, the 2004 tsunami did unrepairable damage to India. Climate change causes huge financial losses around the globe, it is making $850 billion average losses each year to infrastructure thus resulting in the development, of poor countries that are badly affected due to this.

Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: A big step to tackle Climate Change

How Climate-resilient Infrastructure can help in challenging and standing tall against climate change?

As the saying goes, “One must be ready to be surprised.” Infrastructure that is planned, developed, operated, and constructed with climate change in mind is known as climate-resilient infrastructure. It not only withstands against climate change but can also easily be restricted right after the destruction.

European nations particularly Denmark have put efforts towards it. It has constructed various climate-resilient infrastructure. Climate-resilient infrastructure is the future.

Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure – The Indian Prime Minister established the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, or CDRI, during the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York, USA.

It is a coalition partnership with the UN, national governments, and multilateral development banks, playing an important role in promoting and bringing resilience of new and existing infrastructure to climate change and disasters and at the same time supporting sustainable developments. CDRI helping several countries around the globe with future-oriented infrastructure that can withstand climate change and fulfil sustainable developments.

CDRI is conducting various studies around the world and helping in developing various sectors to help them in developing a resilient infrastructure.

Power Sector – CDRI is conducting a three-party study to understand the effect of Cyclone Fani in Odisha in the year in 2019 on the resilience of the power sector infrastructure. The power sector is the backbone of any country you pick around the world, without power there is nothing that can be operated. This disaster affected the power sector in Odisha very badly which led to the loss of US $1.2 billion loss. Their study will raise awareness and will help in understanding the possibility of risks managing those risks and mitigating those risks while fighting future disasters.

Transportation- Any disruption or blockage in transportation can lead to a severe consequence for the economy and the people. This could lead to the vulnerability of the economy to the nation. CDRI will study the consequences of climate change disasters on transportation and the financial losses due to it. It will analyze the need for changes to be made maybe the need for a new transportation system along with the need for upgradation of the existing system.
European nations particularly Denmark have put efforts towards it. It has constructed various climate-resilient infrastructure. Asian countries have also participated in upgrading climate-resilient infrastructure. China and Singapore have developed infrastructure and adopted the “sponge city” practice and concept where it will have various changes in the structure to help in reducing floods increase in water supply and enhance the quality of water.

India is developing the Mumbai Coastal Project Road where they are using a Monopile foundation system which will be helpful and minimize the disturbance to the seabeds. This project, where it is commenced, after a survey it was found that there are 11 types of coral reefs. These coral reefs were moved to new locations.

Climate resilient infrastructure is the need of time, it can help in the development of better infrastructure that will last longer in the future period.

As the world contends with intensifying climate change, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi is set to join global leaders and stakeholders at COP29—the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC to promote the potential of nuclear solutions in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and monitoring. COP29 will be held from 11 to 22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, featuring the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Climate pavilion, which will highlight the ways nuclear energy and science contribute to global climate action.

Following the momentum of COP28 in Dubai, where nuclear energy was formally acknowledged as part of the clean energy transition, COP29 represents another significant step. The Global Stocktake, conducted at COP28, prioritized the use of low-emission technologies, including nuclear power, as the key to achieving rapid decarbonization.

Spotlight on Investment in Low-Carbon Technologies

A key theme of COP29 will be climate finance. A recent UN report, released on 28 October, emphasizes that current policies and investments are insufficient to maintain global temperature rise within the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Agreement. Addressing this gap, Grossi will join high-level representatives from the COP29 Presidency, the International Energy Agency (IEA), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and multilateral development banks in a special event hosted by the COP29 Presidency.

Small Modular Reactors: A Flexible Climate Solution

A notable part of the IAEA’s COP29 presence will be its focus on small modular reactors (SMRs). In collaboration with the U.S. Government, Grossi will co-host a high-level event on SMRs, which offer flexible, cost-effective energy solutions. SMRs are particularly well-suited for small energy grids, developing countries, and energy-intensive sectors like data centers, manufacturing, and even maritime vessels.

Road towards Sustainable Development

The IAEA will also highlight how nuclear techniques support sustainable development by enhancing food security, water resource management, and ocean health monitoring. On 12 November, Grossi will join representatives from UNIDO, the FAO, and the WTO at an event titled “Decarbonizing and Adapting the Cotton-to-Clothing Value Chain through Multisectoral Partnerships.” This event will examine innovative approaches to reducing emissions in the cotton sector, building climate resilience, and fostering collaborative solutions.

Also on 12 November, Grossi will participate in an event hosted by China that underscores how nuclear technology supports climate-smart agriculture through the IAEA/FAO Atoms4Food initiative. Additionally, on 20 November, a joint event hosted by the IAEA, FAO, and CGIAR will discuss the benefits of South-South cooperation in advancing climate action through nuclear solutions.

Monitoring Glacier Melt and Ensuring Water Security

Recognizing glacier retreat as a key indicator of climate change, the IAEA will participate in various events on this topic. With glacier melt affecting water resources, these discussions will emphasize monitoring and assessment to promote sustainable water management.

Paving the way for Climate Resilience

To drive meaningful impact, the Network has introduced two core programs which encourage hands-on collaboration between urban professionals and local communities.

Creative City Walk – A Think Tank on the Move will be hosted monthly in cities across the GCC. These sessions combine on-the-ground engagement with expert insight, allowing participants to explore city-specific challenges in real-world settings. This “mobile think tank” facilitates interactions between community members and urban designers by connecting urban planning with the people it serves and inspiring impactful, innovative solutions.
Creative City Talk – Cross-disciplinary conversations will be held quarterly with delivery of content provided in chapters by city, beginning with Riyadh. The initiative aims to provide a collaborative space where urban experts can present insights and ideas before participating in a roundtable discussion on critical topics in city development. This programme encourages knowledge-sharing and seeks to uncover new voices, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to the complex challenges facing today’s urban spaces.
