China seeks climate change New energy cooperation with Australia’s foreign ministry
China wants to collaborate with Australia’s foreign ministry on climate change and new energy. In a statement from the foreign ministry on Tuesday, China hopes that Australian miner BHP (BHP.AX) can take advantage of opportunities for cooperation in developing sectors including climate change and new energy while working on more advantageous joint ventures.
The comments were delivered by China Deputy Foreign Minister Xie Feng at a meeting with BHP CEO Mike Henry on March 27, according to the ministry.
In the press release, Xie also expressed the expectation that BHP will do more to enhance China-Australian relations.
The summit takes place at a time of diplomatic thawing between Beijing and Canberra after relations soured due to disagreements over the cause of the COVID-19 outbreak and trade restrictions years ago.
In order to lower emissions and increase energy efficiency in the smelting and refining operations, BHP announced last month that it had inked memorandums of understanding with two Chinese copper producers.
The international miner also came to an agreement to test carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology with the Chinese steel giant HBIS Group Co Ltd (000709.SZ).
