SUSTAINABLE EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN THE TOURSIM SECTOR: AN INNOVATIVE ATTEMPT BY DUBAI MUNICIPALITY

As per the traveler evaluations posted by TripAdvisor, Dubai secured the first position as the most visited and livable city in the world, and the Emirates’ city’s tourism is surging post pandemic. The city’s efforts to further strengthen its thriving economy and eco-tourism sector comes with a move from its Municipality.

A digital platform has been launched by the Dubai Municipality to educate and create awareness about the biodiversity among all members of society. This platform is a one-stop solution consisting necessary information and services on Dubai’s 8 natural reserves for tourists. This platform can be accessed through the following link- https://www.dm.gov.ae/dubai-protected-areas/.

The digital platform also provides information on the Municipality’s offers on environmental education in the natural reserves, and activities, lectures and workshops for students, visitors and teachers. Through this medium, visitors can schedule tours with reserve guide, and also learning about bird and go birdwatching. The platform also deals with the efforts taken by the Dubai Municipality in preservation of these reserves through programs manage natural habitat, monitor water quality in reserves, and manage seaweed and wildlife.

Furthermore, the platform provides easy access to all the information necessary to visit these reserves, such as visiting hours and directions, safety tips, local weather forecasts, a map of the reserves’ locations in Dubai, and the option to take a virtual 360-degree tour of the international wetland reserves.

Dubai’s natural reserves which covers a vast expanse of 1,297 km, accounts for 31% of the city’s total area. The eight designated natural reserves are Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, Hatta Mountain Reserve, Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, Ghaf Nazwa Conservation Reserve, Jebel Nazwa Conservation Reserve, Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, and Al Wohoosh Desert Conservation Reserve, of which the former three are enlisted as wetlands of international significance under the Ramsar Convention. All these reserves are home to several species of flora and fauna and are of ecological significance.
