UN Climate Change Conference – United Arab Emirates

From November 30 to December 23, 2023, Dubai will host the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28). The nations that have ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and other climate actors will be present at this international climate meeting.

According to their statement, North-South solidarity and the energy transition are the main priorities of the Emirati presidency of COP28.

Why does COP28 matter?

Already, the world is seeing never-unseen effects of global warming, including devastating floods, record-breaking wildfires, and terrible heat waves. Worse, the Global Stocktake, the first-ever report card on climate progress, duly revealed just how far behind the targets we have set for ourselves. Dramatic measures are now needed to improve our climate. The world has a chance to improve at COP28.

Every year, the UN Climate Change Conference of Leaders meets in a different city to highlight the significance of international cooperation. This year, the gathering will occur in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from November 30 to December 12.

Although the overarching objective of these gatherings is to enhance worldwide collaboration in the fight against climate change, the particular subjects may differ each year.

As was the case last year, the host nation establishes the initial course and tone of the conversation.

Which areas are the primary focus of this year’s COP28 UAE?

  • Make the conference more accessible and inclusive,
  • Encourage mitigation strategies to increase aspiration.
  • Pay attention to the requirements for the Global Goal on Adaptation and the developments on adaptation financing.
  • Proceed with the operationalization of the COP 27 loss and damage fund.
  • Make sure that access to climate finance is more egalitarian.

Why is TNC at COP28 UAE?

At COP28 Dubai 2023, there will be a great chance to promote nature’s vital role in limiting climate change and carrying out the Paris Agreement, as there will be some of the most influential policymakers and climate specialists in the world.

TNC personnel will be at the forefront of conversations with government and industry leaders as countries update and align their climate policies, advocating for greater ambition to phase out fossil fuels, increase societal resilience, and increase investment in mitigation and adaptation measures.

To achieve these goals, we will be pushing for increased investment from the public and private sectors, notably to support those nations that have been most negatively impacted by climate change, as well as a quicker transition to renewable energy sources and greater use of natural climate solutions.

Since they are the ones who understand how to coexist with the environment in their communities the best, we’ll also be working to make sure the voices of the Indigenous and local communities are heard.

What can we expect from COP28 Dubai 2023?

Alongside the negotiation process this year, the Presidency has set out four primary objectives:

  • Accelerating a fair, systematic, and impartial energy shift.
  • Repairing the climate finance system.
  • Prioritizing livelihoods, nature, and human well-being in climate action.
  • I have also organized the most inclusive COP to date.
  • The primary concern will likely be accelerating the energy transition, given the ongoing disagreements among nations about addressing the world’s unsustainable reliance on fossil fuels.

The EU will be pressing for a world-first agreement to phase out the “unabated” worldwide usage of coal, oil, and gas. Other negotiation groups and nations such as Saudi Arabia and other big fossil fuel producers, as well as developing countries whose economies depend on fossil fuels, are probably going to fight back against this.

A deal to double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency and increase the capacity of renewable energy globally by 2030 is also being pushed. Though less contentious than proposals to gradually phase out fossil fuels, some, like the EU, have stated they won’t support one without the other.

The initial Global Stocktake, which will take place at the beginning of the summit, will highlight the need for an ambitious accord. The extent to which nations are failing to fulfill their obligations under the Paris Agreement to mitigate global warming will be revealed by this “report card” on climate progress.

It opens the door for some countries to reroute their climate policies in order to put the globe back on track.

Discussions at COP27 were dominated by loss and damage money, and last year’s agreement to establish such a fund was hailed as a big success.

Wrapping It Up

With countries battling pressing climate issues, the 28th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai is of utmost importance. This climate meeting is a vital chance to create group action toward mitigating climate change and preparing for its effects in light of the world’s growing climate impacts.
