Spread the love

At Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

112 world leaders and over 35,000 participants gather at the annual United Nations (UN) climate summit

COP27 in Egypt on the 7th and 8th of November 2022 to discuss climate-induced loss and damage and translate

climate commitments of the Paris agreement into full implementation. It was emphasized that the world has

witnessed unprecedented extreme weather events with prominent costs that have dramatically affected

the lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable community. COP27 seeks to accelerate global climate

action through emissions reduction, scaled-up adaptation efforts, and enhanced flows of appropriate

finance.

COP27 creates a unique opportunity in 2022 for the world to unite, to make multilateralism work by

restoring trust and coming together at the highest levels to increase our ambition and action in fighting

climate change.

Many are claiming that COP27 is the world’s best last chance to control climate change”

Six-point action agenda that were captured at COP27:

1. Just Transition: Just energy transition plan should be just and inclusive, aiming at reliability and

affordable clean energy resource to ensure energy security and at the same time secure the

future and livelihood of workers in the polluting industry affected by the Just Energy Transition policy.

2. Innovative Finance: Develop a global hub/marketplace for climate finance to encourage the

creation of climate finance platforms. Transfer of public and private money from developed to

developing countries to help them adapt to climate impact and cut emissions.

3. Investing in the Future of Energy- Green Hydrogen: Hydrogen is the most abundant chemical

element in the world and is considered one of the main enablers to achieve the net zero

transformation. COP27 presents a great opportunity to showcase development to date on Green

Hydrogen, discuss ways to unlock the potentials of Hydrogen and provide a space for discussions

between all stakeholders on what is needed to move from strategies and plans to implementation

and delivering at-scale projects on the ground.

4. Food Security: Agriculture sector is on one hand among the most vulnerable to climate

change, on the other it is a major contributor to GHGs emissions and the main driver of

deforestation. Combating climate change should include regenerative agricultural practices,

reduced trade restrictions and changes in consumption and diet patterns, as well as looking into

alternatives for proteins.

5. Water Security: Water security is a global issue affecting both developing and developed

countries. At COP27 developed as well as developing countries try to disclose success stories around

water management regarding how to accelerate the implementation of projects aimed at

allocating water resources in the most efficient way and ensuring their best socio-economic use

among professional sectors & communities globally.

6. Climate Change and the Sustainability of Vulnerable Communities: Cop27 aims to support the

vulnerable communities, that are on the frontline of climate change. They should no longer be a

subject of charity but must be handled in the context of sustainable development in an equitable

manner.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that we need to put more effort into drastically reducing

emissions now. We must not cross the red line that takes our planet over the 1.5-degree global

temperature rise limit. “We can and must win this battle for our lives” he concluded.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 finally closed on 20th November 2022 with a

breakthrough agreement to provide “loss and damage” funding for vulnerable countries hit hard by

climate disasters.
